It’s that time of the year again when many of us take on the responsibility of creating New Year’s resolutions. Often, this is an expectation that no one else has, but us. Some advice: let that stuff go. Here is an article to help you do just that:

Setting the (Calm) Scene

When you are about to take on new tasks, such as learning new skills like cooking, making healthier lifestyle choices, cleaning, or redecorating, take your time to set the tone, burn some incense, light scented candles or switch on your oil diffuser. Lavender, rose, chamomile and frankincense are the best calming scents out there. And when you are about to finish your task, start running a bath with these aromatherapy oils to relax in as a reward when you are done!

Sweat it!

When writing your New Year’s resolutions, spare some time for exercise. Gym, yoga, running – whatever you feel like doing. When you get your body moving it produces mood-enhancing endorphins, which can help to relieve stress. You can then become more productive, which means you are one step closer towards achieving your 2017 goals.

Call it a Day

There can always be more cleaning, more home improvements, better lifestyle choices to make and never ending to do lists… stop. Be honest and ask yourself if all that is really necessary. By all means, embrace the challenges and goals you have set yourself for the New Year but be wise enough to know when to take a step back and relax.

Inhale, Exhale

If none of this works and the ‘New Year, New Me’ approach to January 2017 is overwhelming, take a break and sit in a quiet room. Focus on your breath. Take five seconds to inhale fully, hold your breath for five seconds, and exhale for another five seconds. Breathing slowly sends a message to your nervous system, allowing it to calm down. And remember, there’s always wine.
